Baldomero García Solís has continued his family’s pottery tradition in the town of Níjar (Almería), where he learned the craft from childhood. He has been professionally dedicated to ceramics since 1991 and currently runs a workshop that has been designated a Point of Artisan Interest.
Over the years, he has managed to combine respect for tradition with the incorporation of technical innovations. Although his workshop still preserves a wood-fired kiln, he now uses oil-fired and electric kilns, which allow precise temperature control. The manual potter’s wheel has been replaced by an electric one, while maintaining the handcrafted, piece-by-piece production process, with decoration and glazing carried out entirely by hand.
As part of his innovation process, Baldomero has replaced the traditional lead sulfide (galena) glaze with safer alternatives sourced from specialized suppliers. This ensures the safety of the pieces and allows for a wider range of colors. He has also introduced vitrified stoneware, enabling him to offer more functional products adapted to current market demands, such as tableware, jugs, bowls, and dishwasher-resistant trays.
Committed to passing on his knowledge of the craft, he has taught ceramics courses for both young people and adults in Níjar, and has organized open workshop days. His work actively contributes to preserving the valuable artisanal heritage of his town and region.
His outreach efforts have crossed borders, participating in the European Days of Crafts (2014), as well as exhibitions and workshops at the Museum of Almería and in museums in Germany and France.
In recognition of his career, he was awarded the Master Artisan Certificate on March 17, 2016.
